Our thoughts

Hypable’s Kristina Lintz shares her thoughts on today’s announcements…
If the above list isn’t clear enough, this is the year cable and Netflix simply dominated the nominations. While that has been said plenty of times in the past, this is Orange is the New Black‘s first year and they made their presence known, planting themselves firmly in most of the comedy categories. Perhaps it’s because with so many deserving network dramas (The Good WifeScandal), the network snubs were felt particularly hard this morning. At least Josh Charles, Christine Baranski and Julianna Margulies did get recognized in their respective categories for The Good Wife. Kerry Washington will be representing Scandal, the show many consider to have revived ‘must-see-TV.’
Some may call it trickery, but Netflix did submit OITNB as a comedy, leaving its other heavy-weight, House of Cards to come out swinging in the drama categories. HBO also did particularly well, covering drama with Game of Thrones, comedy with Veep and the TV movie categories for The Normal Heart.
While FX does have Fargo representing the cable network, many fans of The Americans are feeling snubbed. The show – which had a critically-acclaimed season 2 – was left out of all major categories, save Margo Martindale for best guest actress in a drama.
Networks comedies didn’t exactly make out too well either. The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family were the only two network shows that made the cut out of the six shows nominated for best comedy series. Granted, Big Bang Theory has been simply dominating the ratings race, breaking records right and left at a time where it’s nearly impossible to be considered a “ratings success,” so their nomination is rightfully deserved.
Modern Family will be coming into this year’s Emmys looking for a fifth straight win, and it did get a lot of love for supporting actors and actresses, as it has in years past.
You have to look deep into the technical categories to find nominations for shows such as How I Met Your Mother or the freshman comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which won the Golden Globe for best comedy. Most other network comedies were passed over in favor for the HBO comedies Veep and Girls.
The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards will be hosted by Seth Meyers and broadcast live Monday, August 25 at 8 p.m. eastern/5 p.m. pacific on NBC.
